Physical Evidence

ChemCentre scientists play a key role in the justice system. Our specialist forensic scientists assist with coronial and criminal investigations and work with police in the recovery, identification and comparison of microscopic amounts of materials submitted in connection with crimes. ChemCentre is recognised as one of the nation’s leading laboratories in the characterising of trace evidence such as paint, hair, textile fibres and glass as well as fire accelerants, explosives and gunshot residues.

Our laboratory is NATA-accredited under the forensic chemistry criminalistics classification and our scientists are trained in specific method areas and often provide expert testimony in court. We undertake various research projects, including the introduction of new technologies and methods; our internationally recognised fibres database is proving crucial to successfully prosecuting serious crime in Western Australia.
