The research, led by ChemCentre Senior Scientist Dr Manjree Agarwal in partnership with Dr Padraig Strappe and Dr Rina Wong from the Curtin Medical Research Institute, involves the first-ever in‑vitro bioassay studies exploring the anticancer, and antibacterial properties of sandalwood nut oil and nut‑oil-based therapeutic products. The study will also investigate potential anti-inflammatory activities using specialised cell lines, with results expected later in 2026.
This project forms a key component of the End Food Waste CRC and ChemCentre co-funded initiative focused on the high-value utilisation of sandalwood nut waste. Work that is proudly supported by the Australian Sandalwood Network, with therapeutic products for assessment formulated and prepared by Quest Biotech Pharma.
ChemCentre Senior Scientist Dr Manjree Agarwal said the collaboration marks a significant milestone for scientific innovation in Western Australia.
“This research has the potential to unlock new, high-value applications for sandalwood nut oil, supporting the sustainability and long‑term profitability of the sandalwood industry while expanding our scientific understanding of its therapeutic benefits.”
The outcomes of this research have the potential to deliver multi-million‑dollar economic benefits to Western Australia, creating new opportunities for local producers, researchers, and industry partners.
ChemCentre looks forward to sharing the research findings later this year as the project progresses.
