ChemCentre offers a full suite of Acid Sulfate Soils analysis services to permit responsible land development and avoid potentially costly remediation or litigation.
Acid Sulfate Soils (ASS) contain sulphur compounds that can generate sulfuric acid when exposed to oxygen. These naturally occurring soils are commonly (but not exclusively) found in low lying areas that are under increasing pressure by land developers.
Drainage of coastal flood plains, canal development or dredging, or exposure of sulphide-bearing minerals are all potential sources of ASS.
The acid generated by ASS oxidation can release metals from the soil into the environment. The acid and associated metals (aluminium, iron, manganese, arsenic and heavy metals) can cause significant environmental and economic problems.
If developments are to be carried out that involve disturbance or drainage of ASS, a preliminary site assessment is required. This enables the ASS to be managed and adverse impacts can be avoided, minimised or ameliorated.
