Native plantChemCentre has a team of researchers that have experience in the isolation and analysis of bioactive substances that are found in cultivated plants and in native plants and forest plant species.

Some bioactive substances promote good health and have potential for the prevention of cardiovascular disease and some cancers. However, there are some bioactive substances that can cause detrimental effects on the health of humans and animals.

ChemCentre staff conduct research into bioactive substances in collaboration with universities, industry and government departments.

Scientific support is provided in the areas of:

  • Identification of novel and known bioactive substances in grains, plant material and native plants
  • Isolation and preparation of bioactive substances from grains, plant material and native plants
  • Complex investigations of health benefits in grain, plant material and native foods and the development of functional foods
  • Complex investigation into the composition of grains and foods

ChemCentre staff can provide a range of analytical and advisory services to the food and feed industries regarding bioactive substances.

The following analyses are conducted:
Fatty acids and fatty acid profiles Phytosterols Phenolics
Antioxidants Flavanoids (isoflavanoids, anthocynin) Phytoestrogens
Cartenoids Vitamins Alkaloids
Trypsin/chymotrypsin inhibitor activity Phytates Lectins
Oxalates Tannins Oligosaccharides

The ChemCentre has the equipment base for the research, identification, isolation and analysis, of bioactive compounds from a range of matrixes:

  • Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS)
  • Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS)
  • High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) with a variety of detectors
  • Preparative High Pressure Liquid Chromatography
  • Gas chromatography with a wide range of detectors
  • Bioanalyser
  • Access to NMR facilities
