Managing chemical hazards to protect the community

Emergency Response

ChemCentre_Emergency_Response.jpg

From identifying suspicious powders in airports, to advising on industrial chemical hazards, our emergency and crisis response portfolio is diverse – we provide chemical support to government agencies and departments in Chemical, Biological and Radiological (CBR) incidents.

We collaborate with a number of government agencies on emergency response issues, including:

  • Western Australian Police
  • Department of Fire and Emergency Services
  • WA Health
  • Department of Environmental Regulation

HAZMAT

We provide 24-hour emergency response services by way of specialist personnel, a HAZMAT on-call vehicle, appropriate sampling systems and state-of-the-art equipment.

Our organisation has mandated responsibilities under four state disaster management plans – the WA Hazardous Materials Emergency Management Plan (WestPlan-HAZMAT),  the WA Emergency Management Chemical, Biological Radiological plan (WestPlan CBR), the WA Emergency Management Plan for Health (WestPlan Health) and the WA Management Plan of Emergencies Associated with a Collapse (WestPlan Collapse). We are also a member of the HAZMAT Emergency Advisory Team (HEAT).

Our operational support includes:

  • Conducting onsite chemical risk assessment analyses
  • Identifying unknown and hazardous chemical agents
  • Liaising with authorities regarding appropriate types of personal protective equipment, protective distances to incidents and ‘Protect in Place’ emergency shelter practices
  • Advising authorities on neutralising hazardous chemicals and reactions
  • Advising on cleanup measures
  • Detailing cleanup and remediation measures following an incident.
