Highly trained chemists make up the ER team which is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and must be ready to respond any time, to any chemical incident anywhere across Western Australia.
The ER team must be ready to deal with a wide range of a chemical compounds and associated risks, so recruits must complete an extended training program of weekly theoretical and practical workshops taught by senior ChemCentre ER chemists and partner agencies.
The comprehensive training arms them with new skills and the confidence to respond to hazardous material (HAZMAT) incidents, working alongside Department of Fire and Emergency Services officers.
The training course covers: HAZMAT chemistry; the operation and maintenance of scientific instruments; working with ’our laboratory on wheels’- the ER van; interpretation of results; personal protective equipment (PPE); sampling in the hot-zone; and decontamination.
All recruits have existing full-time roles at ChemCentre, therefore the training is designed to fit around the trainee’s existing workload.
Once training is completed, recruits will be eligible to join the on-call roster, further strengthening and diversifying the ER team.
