Peter McCafferty Appointed CEO of ChemCentre

Date Published: 01-Jun-17

It is with great pleasure the Board and I welcome Peter McCafferty as the CEO of ChemCentre, effective 8 June 2017 upon my retirement.
Peter comes into the position after a 15-year stint as the Director of ChemCentre’s Scientific Services Division (SSD).  Peter joined ChemCentre in 1992 after employment as an analytical chemist in private sector including Wesfarmers CSBP, Genalysis and WMC resources where he was responsible for developing several innovative analytical methods and quality control.

As Director of SSD, he currently supervises over sixty staff in areas including Emergency Response, Environmental Chemistry, Food and Agricultural Chemistry, Water Chemistry, Petroleum Chemistry and Occupational Hygiene.  He has directed this diverse group through significant periods of change including transition to a statutory authority, increased financial accountability, (growing revenue in all but one of the last 5 years), absorbing National Measurement Institute’s (NMI) former business and establishing a strategically focused Research and Development portfolio.

Peter has been an essential member of the ChemCentre’s Executive team since its creation as a statutory authority in 2007.  He led ChemCentre’s negotiations with NMI and wrote the organization’s Risk Policy which underpins the fundamental shift in our financial perspective.  Peter has also acted as CEO of ChemCentre on many occasions.

Peter has personally secured and managed many of ChemCentre’s largest commercial contracts including those with the Water Corporation, Department of Transport (Esperance), AIMS, FMG and others.  He is also the principal scientific consultant to Government on the Perth Children’s Hospital lead issue.

Among his professional achievements, Peter headed the ChemCentre team which was awarded the 2013 Australian Water Association WA Water Award for Water Recycling and was a key participant in the interagency team that received the 2013-14 Premiers Award for “Managing the Environment” recognizing the Esperance Clean Up and Recovery Team, who undertook, the largest environmental cleanup ever undertaken in Australia. Peter was awarded the 2004 Royal Australian Chemical Institute Wilf Ewers Citation (and cash prize) for “services to the Profession of Chemistry”.
ChemCentre is fortunate in securing Peter’s services as we continue to develop as a dynamic and professional organization dedicated to ensuring a safe and prosperous Western Australian community.
