2014 ChemCentre Open Day Report

2014 ChemCentre Open Day Report

Date Published: 01-Sep-14

On the 23 August 2014 over 3000 enthusiastic visitors attended ChemCentre’s fouth annual Open Day to discover how science saves the day!

The ChemCentre superheroes, who made their debut in 2013, returned once again to explore the chemistry used to protect the WA community.

As always we were delighted to have some of our industry partners return for 2014 with several agencies joining us for the first time. Racing and Wagering WA and Greyhounds as Pets were as popular as ever, teaming up with ChemCentre to explore the science behind the WA racing industry and bringing along some furry friends.

The WA Police, Department of Fire and Emergency Services and the Department of Health showcased the joint responses to chemical emergencies and clandestine drug laboratory activities. The teams provided a great insight into the science behind dangerous chemical situations and the different roles each agency plays.

Annual favourites like liquid nitrogen ice cream and fairy floss proved to be as popular as ever with visitors young (and not so young) enjoying some sugar-infused science.

Visitors under seven years old also enjoyed a new Little Heroes show, an addition to the Little Heroes activities built into the program last year. The audience explored everyday science and used their senses to investigate the world around them, where the large vapour filled bubbles were a definite highlight.

There were two other new additions to this year’s program; Make Your Own Perfume and Crafty Chemistry. At Make Your Own Perfume visitors got the chance to use chemistry to make their own personalised perfume and discover the importance of odours in the work ChemCentre performs. Crafty Chemistry proved to be a big hit with pre-loved lab glassware going to sale to the public to be used for decorations and craft projects. All proceeds from Crafty Chemistry will be used to support secondary chemistry education in WA.

This year was by far the biggest yet, with crowd numbers doubling from 1500 in 2013 to 3000 this year. ChemCentre staff, volunteers and partners thoroughly enjoyed the day with visitors commenting on how much they enjoyed the passion and enthusiasm staff have for their work. We’ve included our favourite Open Day photos above but be sure to check out our Facebook page for all of the day’s action shots!
